I’ve completed a lot of sewing projects in my day, and I’m not lying when I say these bowl cozy’s are one of my favorite things to sew. They are so easy to make and make fantastic gifts for family and friends. My husband and I love making soups and crock pot meals (especially during these cold Winter months in Michigan), and always enjoy using our bowl cozy’s for these types of meals. Follow along while I show you how to sew a bowl cozy of your own!
Supplies:
- (2) 10″x10″ Squares of Cotton Fabric. I got my fabric from Hobby Lobby. There are plenty of options to choose from as well as at Jo-Ann Fabrics.
- (1) 10″x10″ Square of Batting
- Sewing Machine
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pins
- Thread
- Air or Water-Soluble Marker
Step 1: Cut Fabric
Start by cutting the fabric pieces that you will need – don’t worry, it’s only 3 squares!
Cut one 10″x10″ square of batting.
Cut two 10″x10″ squares of cotton fabric.
Note: If you decided to use two different fabric patterns like I did, just cut one 10″x10″ square out of each of the fabrics.
Step 2: Sew the “X”
Place the square of batting on top of one of your squares of cotton fabric and pin in place.
Note: If your fabric has a “right” and “wrong” side, make sure you pin the batting to the “wrong” side of the fabric.

Once pinned, flip the square so that the batting is facing upward.
Using an air or water-soluble fabric marker, draw two lines connecting the opposite corners of the square. Essentially, you are creating a “X”.
Sew over these lines.

Step 3: Create the Darts
Next, it’s time to sew the darts. They are very simple to create and is what will give it its bowl-like shape!
Start by folding the square in half.
Make a mark 2″ down from the top edge.
Make another mark 1″ across from the folded edge.
Sew a line connecting these two marks.

Repeat this process on the other side of the square.
Then, fold the square the other way this time and create two more darts.

Trim the excess fabric to reduce bulk, making sure not to cut too close to the stitching.

Step 4: Repeat the Process
Repeat this process on the second square of cotton fabric. The only difference is that this piece does not need any batting.
Step 5: Assemble the Bowl Cozy
At this point, you should have two pieces that are essentially the same.
Place one piece of cotton fabric over the other so that the right sides are together.

Pin into place.
Sew around the whole square with 1/4″ seam allowance, making sure to leave at least a 3″ wide opening at one side of the square. We need this opening in order to turn to whole thing right side out.

Once sewn, use the opening to turn the bowl cozy right side out.

Fold and pin the 3″ opening closed.
Create a top stitch by sewing around the whole square 1/8″ away from the square edges.

That’s it – you’re done!
I hope you enjoyed learning how to sew a bowl cozy. This project is one that as soon as I made one, I quickly got the hang of it and could make many in one sitting (and I’m sure, you will too).
I would love to see your completed bowl cozy’s and the fabric combinations you decide to choose.
